Offdev
Nobody is any good at one thing only. These are the pursuits that keep the other part of my brain awake, and quietly make the work better.
Most of these started as a way to stop thinking about code, and ended up feeding straight back into it.
The work gets better
when the rest of
your life does.
Personalpursuits

Building things nobody asked for
Half my best work started as a throwaway weekend experiment. Most die quietly. A few end up on the projects page.

Gaming
Partly for the fun, mostly because good games are the best design lesson going: feedback, pacing, and systems that teach you the rules without a manual.

Training
The one thing that reliably clears a head full of stack traces. Show up, add a little weight, repeat. It works the same way code does.

It is not about doing one thing well. It is about what the other things teach you when you come back to it.
Photography
Learning to notice light, composition, and what to leave out. It has made me better at interfaces than any design course.

Taking hardware apart
Robotics, microcontrollers, and the occasional device that does not go back together. Screens are more interesting when they can move something.

Travel
New cities, new problems, new ways of doing ordinary things. It resets the part of my brain that thinks there is only one right approach.
